Zombified

Getting Stuff Done How do I .... ?

Today, Ardour crashed repeatedly and gave me a message that said “zombified”. I could do nothing at all except to “just quit” without saving and restart Ardour. But then it would happen again after a while.

I’m sorry I have no other information than this, but I do not know what to provide or even what to look for. It was very, very frustrating. I’m just making this post and shutting down my DAW for the day, hoping to come back later to see if someone could at least tell me what to look for in figuring out why this happens.

Try to launch ardour from a console/terminal, then when the crash occurs, see if there is any output in the console and if yes paste it here.

This is one for the bug reports where they will get seen. bug reports on here mostly get ignored or missed.

Here’s the output from a terminal when I started Ardour from the command line. I had Ardour running for a while before it happened again, but at this point, it seems to always happen sooner or later during the work day, and more than once. I have no idea what’s relevant and what’s not, so here’s the whole thing:

Also, when starting Ardour immediately after a crash like this, Ardour (I assume - what else could it be?) produces a brief, distorted buzzing through my console while displaying the startup splash screen. This buzzing happens only if I start Ardour immediately following this kind of crash.

Seems to be happening very frequently now. This is very frustrating. Submitted bug report (http://tracker.ardour.org/view.php?id=5837) but would still like to know what I can to do stop this from happening.

@nick_livings: I’ve noticed bursts of noise happening when restarting Ardour after a crash too, I think something is left behind / not flushed properly from JACK when a client (e.g ardour) exits unexpectedly (not nice when monitoring via headphones as I discovered recently…)
There also seems to be something badly wrong with an LV2 plugin (or some associated file) - specifically the:
error: /usr/lib64/lv2/math-functions.lv2/math-functions.ttl:76:30: name ends with `.’
lilv_plugin_get_name(): warning: Plugin has no (mandatory) doap:name
messages and I would be suspicious of the
RubberBandPitchShifter::runImpl: buffer underrun: required = 1024, available = 1008
messages too - that doesn’t look very happy at all.

Hello, I am new to the forum, but INDEED THERE IS A VERY SERIOUS BUG IN ARDOUR as a musician every person wants to have a running smooth ardour gui but it hangs from the beginning to the the end and everytime i want to restart a recording only a few seconds can be done but then a sudden freeze of ardour keeps coming up. no matter how i put jack in settings or the most fast computer i can use. It only not hangs when you don’t record a line in jack. so it can only be used as a monitoring programme. and then it is still not good programmed because it takes too long (half a minute) to start up even without jack server running. this is also a weird fact because in earlier versions the programme used to be as stable as a house in an stormy weather and not as at this buggy moment that it takes so many weird bugs in it. I am really hoping that the developers give back the previous version which was realiable to everyone and it was no rubbish (excuse me the word but it is the only truth) it can’t compete with audacity any longer. and this programma used to be slower than now.

Hoping a very backward solution is possible so that musicians can be doing what they were doing and don’t crash anymore in a new version.
only the good thing is: led meter implementation just debug that and throw video support out of it and other rare used plugins so we can continue mixing and line recording metering without rubbish please and do it fast as possible.

Well the issue is you seem to be having a problem noone else is, and typically that indicates something in particular with your system. So I would suggest filing a bug report in the bug tracker to start with, but if you can get on IRC it would probably be good as well.

I would also suggest that the point of Ardour has nothing to do with Audacity. They are completely different programs with completely different purposes.

I also would suggest that while you don’t use the video support, others, including myself do, and in fact am about to release another video the audio was done in Ardour with it, quite successfully I might add and never had any problem you described.

I got errors similar to this when I tried to get too low a latency in jack. I adjusted Frames/Period and Periods/Buffer until the errors went away. I think enabling realtime when your system isn’t fully set up for it can cause this too.
