Yet another Live Recording mixed with Ardour (Plus a Time Lapse-Video)

Hi there,

here comes another showing-off… a live recording of one of my bands, mixed down in Ardour and put together with a time-lapse video in Kdenlive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPyAYvd2kXQ

The lyrics are in Swabian, a dialect spoken in Southern Germany. “Moschtschorle” means cider mixed with sparkling water. Germans like to mix stuff with sparkling water. The Swabian cider is not very bearable when tried to enjoy straight. It is something like the traditional homegrown drug of the region. The original chord progression is from Tom Waits’ “Temptation”… which is kind of related, having the unability to resist as its theme.

The audio was captured using an Allen & Heath Qu-16 digital console. This console has a built-in 18 track recorder that saves 24bit/48khz data directly to USB storage. The single tracks then were imported into Ardour. (Details below.) The time-lapse video was created from approx. 800 shots taken by a DSLR camera on a tripod.

Mics used:

  • Cajon inside: Sennheiser E901
  • Cajon front: Rode NT5
  • Hihat close-micing from below: Rode NT5
  • Overhead for HiHat and Splash: Rode NT5
  • Vocals: Rode M2
  • Blues Harp: Rode M2
  • Bass: DI-Out of SWR Amp
  • Electric Guitar: DI Out of Line6 Pod HD500

FX & Plugins:

  • BlackEQ from LinuxDSP on all channels
  • DYN500 gate from LinuxDSP on Cajon inside
  • Voxengo Voxformer compressor (WindowsVST) on cajon inside, vocals, bass
  • Yamaha REV-X Reverbs (outboard in a 01V96i console)
  • Voxengo Elephant mastering compressor/limiter (WindowsVST) for mastering

Doing the time warp, eerm time-lapse:

  1. All shots were batch-processed using DigiKam (automatic exposure, resizing, sharpening).
  2. Using ImageMagick, the shots then were cropped to HD 720p size and stored as JPEG.
  3. With mencoder, a MJPEG video was created at 6.6fps from the single files.
  4. That MJPEG video was imported into Kdenlive and combined with the audio and texts.

We also have some “real” concert videos which are currently being cut by the video crew we had that night. The audio for those was also mixed down in Ardour, with a few more plugins and stuff used.

Feel free to comment or ask questions on the procedure.

All the best
