Hi. I am very new to using DAW, and Ardour is the first program I have used.
I am getting a very high-pitched whine, which I can only assume is feedback of some kind, but only when nothing is playing.
Any ideas what this might be?

Mic input being routed to speaker output, and the sound from the speaker finding its way back into the mic. It stops when you start playback because the mixer is then connected to the on-disk recorded sounds instead of the input channels.

It is completely dependent on the audio interface (“soundcard”) that you are using. The solution will be specific to that device.
Are you using a laptop with a webcam? If so, disable the internal mic.
