LADSPA vs LV2 -- which is better?

LV2 claims to be the successor to LADSPA, but AFAIK LADSPA plugins are much more popular. Furthermore, LV2 is NOT backwards compatible with LADSPA.

Will Ardour support LV2 plugins soon? Is LV2 a failed spec(or maybe deprecated)? Which standard should plugin writers use today?

LV2 is still not a finalized, officially released standard. So a lack of (released) hosts and plugins is hardly a surprise.
