It is indeed no embedded search engine, but there’s a search string which opens Google search only for this site. I marked it red:

it’s worth mentioning, that the button is only visible on “larger” screens. on my macbook air 11’ it disappears if the browser is not at full width…

I have this too on my PC 1680 screen. I suggest to keep the macbook.

Watching this forum on my iPad in Safari. Guess what, no search box.

It depends on the width of your browser window. If I leave Iceweasel (on Debian) at default width the search box doesn’t show. It does show if I maximise the window (which is then stupidly wide for most web pages). This is on a 1440 x 900 screen.
