Anybody sharing record drive between Linux and Mac?

Greetings,

I am trying to set up a Firewire drive I can save sessions on, and open with full read/write access on both Linux and OSX. I am having trouble setting up the formatting and permissions to make this work. I was advised on Ubuntu Forums to use HFS+ without journaling rather than FAT32, because of the file size limitation of the latter.

After formatting on the Mac, with read/write permissions for all users, I found I could read the drive in Ubuntu, and drag/drop files on to it. The files could not be removed, however, and an Ardour session recorded on the Mac could not be opened. Any idea how to do this?

The problem is most likely the “rights management”. Both Mac OS-X and GNU/Linux are unices and while the BSD Unix based OSX has another “look”, it’s still BSD (ever asked yourself, why Apple came up with a command line in OS-X?)

Unices generally are very user friendly - they just happen to chose their friends more cautiously :o) and I suppose that the mac-made files are “owned” by the “mac-user” and Linux (not Ardour) searches for the “permission” to open them.

To find out if I am right (which is unlikely, but hey - give it a shot), please open a terminal in linux and connect to the drive, reading the content of one of the sessions.

it should read like

stefan@homeboy:~/Worx/The Electric Church - Work in Progress$ ls -l

we really do want the linux user to have the right to read, write, change, erase and create in the mac folders … like stefan is allowed here (no wonder - stefan “owns” the files)
