I just picked up a used presonus firebox for very little money, and as soon as I get home (tomorrow) am going to try get it talking to Jack using the ffado drivers. Does anyone have any experience with these units? Any tips/tricks/pitfalls to avoid, especially when it comes to getting the drivers working? I'll be installing on a 64-bit Slackware 13.0 box with a 2.6.29 kernel.

I works just perfectly for me with Ubuntu.
You will need a lowlatency or realtime kernel though.

There's no way to get realtime scheduling working w/o PAM, is there?

2handband: not easily. there is a tool called set_rlimits. see http://www.esaracco.fr/documentation/linuxaudio/linuxaudio/obtaining-rea... (info to be added to the JACK FAQ @ http://jackaudio.org/faq very soon. Almost all distros use PAM by default these days. Not doing so is more or less perverse at this point in time.

Actually Paul, I discovered and installed set_rlimits not five minutes ago! I'm not sure if it's working yet or not... I'm having a little issue getting Jack to fire up.

I would call that not yet working:)

Out of curiosity, why the aversion to PAM?

I once blew up a whole installation with PAM. Pat Volkerding doesn't ship PAM with Slackware... and based on my own experience with the software I can see why.

As for Jack, I did get it working after a fashion, and in realtime mode. Now if i could just get it to recognize the #@$% firewire drivers...

@sawtdk: Are you using the old firewire stack, or the new one?

Now I'm using the new one in Ubuntu 10.10, but have used the old one in 9.10 and 10.04.

With the new stack, are you using Jack1 or Jack2?
