sound devices and audio applications

Hello!

I’m using gentoo and I want to understand how any program that use audio (even a web browser!) interacts with my sound devices. I’m using a FAST TRACK PRO and sometimes i would like to make the sound from some applications to use the interface instead of my internal crappy soundcard. But I dont really understand those /etc/modprobe/ and alsa.conf things! I just followed instructions.

I really want to understand it, and I could read a full book about it. It’s pretty fun!

Thanks.

This is a long subject. To do professional sound on Linux you should use Jack - see http://jackaudio.org/
Lots of other information, tutorials available from googlng.
