I’ve just installed ardour after a clean install of ubuntu 12.04. Ardour loads up fine when I’ve created a session but when i import audio it plays back at around half speed and very distorted. Does anyone have any idea what this maybe? I have Jack and ardour running at 44.1

Sounds like you are having issues with xruns. A requirement of using Ardour is to have your system set up for realtime audio (There is an FAQ about this on jackaudio.org). Ubuntu is notorious for making this very difficult by the way(Not impossible, just difficult), it is highly advised that if you are planning on using this for professional audio work you look into AVLinux or another audio centered distribution of Linux.
